This year Durham saw it’s second Lumiere light festival in which our city was once again transformed into a magical winter wonderland for a total of four not so dark November evenings.
Our involvement has been mainly with behind the scenes work leading up to the festival itself, whether that was photographing workshops or some of the fantastic art works in the making.
Lumiere 2011 was a much-anticipated weekend after the success of the 2009 event, as expected numbers of 140,000 people are thought to have visited the City over the four day duration apparently making it the country’s largest light festival.
Regardless of the hordes hustling and bustling their way through the light filled streets of Durham we managed three out of four nights and just soaked it all up, whether that was a hot dog and a mulled wine at Flat White coffee house or a hog roast sandwich at the Cathedral gardens.
Some of the artworks on the last evening were simply spectacular. We had a chance to take a few shots of some of the exhibitions on show.
We just loved every minute of it and ultimately enjoyed falling in love with our city all over again. Here is a selection of our favorite images from the evening we hope you enjoy them and we look forward to seeing you there in 2013.
Recently Steven embarked on a 1950’s mission to bring awareness to Durham’s most unique Laundrette and its current “Let us take the stress out of Christmas” campaign.
The Old Cinema Launderette is not your average place to drop off your delicates, it is also a 1950’s inspired establishment based in Gilesgate where one can enjoy a coffee and the use of free Wi-Fi while you wait for your laundry. You could even just drop by to grab a coffee to go.
Steven found the setting for this shoot ideal as this place is literally packed with suiting memorabilia and decoration that has obviously been carefully acquired by the proprietors. There are even old washing powder boxes on display.
With such a great setting the theme for this project was always going to be 1950’s Pin-Ups, using the likes of Betty Grable, Ava Gardner and the iconic Marilyn Monroe as the main sources of inspiration.
We feel that the images have conveyed this well and we had a great deal of fun in the process as did Steph the model and all involved. As always we hope that our client is as happy as we are with the results.
It was a blast from the past.

The rest of the team were unimpressed with the strikers new headgear !

This Sunday afternoon we are part of an even at Fowlers Yard called 10x10x10- we are calling it this because it is the 10th day of the 10th month in 2010
So in celebration each of the studios are producing something which is 10x10x10- so we here at Steven landles photography are producing some limited edition prints which are 10cmx10cm and we will be selling them for….yes you guessed it £10 each.
The images are taken from a series that i produced a few years ago about urban landscape in Durham and include images of Durham in a slightly different light- i was very interested in subcultural groups such as Skateboarders and BMXers and what interested me was the way in which they would view the urban landscape in a different way to anyone else- almost thinking of how they can use architecture to create their”art form” the images focus on these “spots” and how there are marks left behind by these sub cultures as they create their art which of course is art in itself- anyway enough of me rambling on a bout it- why not check out some of the images below by clicking read the rest of this entry and if you want a limited edition print for a tenner just let us know.
